Water heaters are fantastic appliances that are designed to give us many years of hassle-free service. But, you would probably be worried if a pool of water suddenly appeared next to your water heater. You’d be pretty sure that you had a water heater leak and might be concerned about how much it would cost to repair it.
An inspection for the source of the leak could point to the T&PR (temperature and pressure relief) valve – a device that releases excessive water pressure. This is what it looks like:
It’s located either on the side of the water heater or on the top.
There should be a tag attached to the T&PR valve informing you how to operate it. The tag on your water heater may show that the valve opens at a temperature of 210°F, or when the internal pressure is 150 PSI (pounds per square inch).
This valve is a crucial safety feature, so don’t tamper with it and don’t ever bypass it. It protects your home from a potential explosion if water is overheated in the tank. The water will be released into a downward pipe that leads to a drain. As the valve opens, it also releases pressure buildup inside the tank to prevent it from bursting.
If you are suspicious that a malfunctioning T&PR valve is responsible for a water heater leak, call a professional plumber, and don’t attempt to replace the valve yourself. You don’t want to turn your water heater into a potentially life-threatening bomb.
