Most of us know that items like toys, feminine hygiene products and other miscellaneous objects should not be flushed down a toilet, but sometimes it happens anyway. Children, in particular, like to flush odd things away when their parents are not watching.
Aside from foreign objects, there are other reasons why a toilet may back up, like old worn pipes that are degenerating, or just overuse – if the house has been fuller than usual for example.
Whatever the reasons, the priority when it happens is getting the toilet unclogged. Simple blockages, also called soft clogs, can often be cleared by using a toilet plunger (note that this is different from a sink plunger). If this does not work, it is time to call a plumber to unclog the toilet. A plumber will have more specialized equipment and knowledge to handle the problem quickly and efficiently.
