Do you want to find a plumber who knows what he’s doing? Of course you do; you don’t want the guy who worked on the neighbor’s bathroom remodeling. He came at a high price, left when he felt like it and his workmanship was shoddy. You need to find someone who is going to get it right the first time and stay under budget. Here are a few tips to make your search for a master plumber successful.
First and foremost, the plumber must be licensed, insured and bonded. You would be surprised at the large number of freelancers out there who claim to be experienced but have actually left (or been fired) from a large company and don’t even have their own insurance. Good plumbers always have their credentials available, ready to show anyone that they are legitimate.
The plumber shouldn’t hesitate to come to your home or site to give an estimate. Unless he’s literally overflowing with work, he should be willing to drive out of his way for a few minutes to present his plan and give you a price before he comes to do the work.
Bear in mind, however, that if you are planning a major project, you’ll need a plumber who doesn’t mind working alongside other contractors. There are plumbers who can competently do repairs and replacements but have little experience on large projects like home remodeling. He’ll have to coordinate his work with structural and electrical contractors.
Finally, get a good reference from a previous customer.
