How to Avoid the Dangers of a Gas Water Heater Leak

Every now and then, the local newspaper carries a story about a house fire caused by a gas water heater leak. Usually, the fire started because flammable materials were too close to the water heater. While there are some dangers associated with gas water heaters, these can be avoided by taking some simple safety precautions.

Carbon Monoxide

• If the water heater is not properly vented, carbon monoxide emissions could poison people and pets. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless and colorless gas that can cause sudden illness or even death. Because of this, it’s often called the “silent killer.” If someone sleeping is exposed to it, they can die before any symptoms are experienced.

Explosion

• The bottoms of new gas water heaters are sealed, so there is little chance of vapors reaching the flame. Older models are not sealed in this manner; therefore, they pose a risk of explosion. Another cause of explosion is a faulty pressure relief valve. If not functioning properly, pressure builds inside the tank, and it will eventually explode. NEVER cap a pressure relief valve.

How to prevent a gas water heater leak

1. Ensure the water heater is well vented.
2. Keep the area around the water heater clean. Use plain water – some cleaners contain chemicals that may be dangerous when mixed with gas fumes.
3. Don’t store flammable or combustible materials near the water heater. The same applies to anything that contains chemicals.
4. Place carbon monoxide detectors in every room of the home and make sure they have fresh batteries. They will alert you if the level becomes dangerous.
