Without your gutters, rainwater would flow down your roof structures, off the eave and land at the base of your home. If water constantly falls at the base of a dwelling, it can erode the soil and cause a grade, which back-pitches towards the house.
This can result in water pooling next to your home, water intruding into the interior and even potential settlement of the foundation. Another possible occurrence is deterioration of the exterior doors and door frames caused by water constantly flowing off the roof to the base.
Most of these moisture problems can be prevented by installing good quality gutters. Many homeowners view gutters and downspouts as areas where they can cut costs. This is unfortunate because they play a major role in protecting homes. If properly installed, good quality gutters and downspouts will save money and big headaches further down the road. They will be worth the costs many times over.
Of course, they still need to be well maintained and kept clear of debris. When working properly, gutters and downspouts move rainwater away from the house into a drainage collection site or underground, thereby protecting a house from the damaging effects of water.
If your downspouts discharge at grade level, it’s very important to extend them to at least 5 feet from the base of your house.
Discuss this issue with a plumber and also ask how often he/she recommends drain cleaning the downspouts. This will ensure that your gutters and downspouts will continue to function, as intended, for years to come.
