How to Save Water [infographic]

Many people do not realize how much water is wasted every day. The simplest things, which we choose to ignore or put off, can contribute to wasted water, and also wasted money paying for water that we do not use. Here are some ideas of ways you could save water in your home, and reduce your water bill in the process.

  • One of the simplest ways to save water is by turning off the tap while brushing teeth or while washing your face or hands. When you are lathered up, or your teeth are all clean, then turn on the water to rinse quickly and then shut it off again as soon as you are done.
  • Take a shower rather than a bath, and don’t dawdle. Showers take less water and get you clean faster.
  • Water your yard or garden during the cool times of the day, such as early morning, late evening, or even set a timer to water them during the night. This allows the plants to soak up the water instead of having the sun evaporate the moisture, forcing you to use more water to help your yard stay green.
  • Buying recycled paper products can save water. Water is used in the process of making paper products, so by using recycled paper products, it cuts down on the amount of water used by manufacturers.
  • Only use your washing machine and dishwasher when they are completely full. Using them when not full will waste water and use extra energy to get all the smaller loads clean. Remember, it takes a lot of water to create energy, as well.
  • When waiting for water to heat up, catch the cold water to use for watering plants or put in the fridge for cold drinks later.
  • Convert your toilet to low flush by installing a double flush mechanism, or by putting a water bottle with rocks in the tank to let less water fill the tank for flushing.
  • Check frequently for leaks and dripping faucets. Even small leaks can waste a lot of water over time. For every drip per minute from a leak, about 34 gallons of water are wasted every year, and the chart below proves just how quickly that problem can escalate. It is always important to fix leaks as soon as they are discovered. Call in a plumber if it is not a leak you can fix on your own.

So next time you turn on the faucet, take a shower, or flush a toilet, think of ways you can save water and energy. Always having your plumbing checked not only for leaks, but to make sure everything is unclogged and running smoothly, is crucial to saving water. Clogged drains can also lead to leaks and thus wasted water. Using just one or two of the suggestions above can save hundreds of gallons of water each year.
