Never Put These Items in Your Garbage Disposal!

Many people believe that they can put virtually anything down into the depths of their garbage disposal, grind it up, and then watch it disappear forever. However, this is not the case. The garbage disposal in your home is an appliance that should be treated with care in order to last and keep doing what it’s supposed to efficiently.

Avoid grinding any dense materials such as glass, metal, plastic, and even paper. Don’t let anything combustible get down into your garbage disposal, as this may cause detrimental problems and may even force you to need to purchase and install a new one.  When you cook bacon or any other type of food that uses grease, don’t pour the excess grease down into your garbage disposal once you are done cooking.  Grease is a liquid that solidifies once it cools down. If there is grease in the tubes of your disposal, it will eventually harden and clog up your system.

When you are cutting vegetables, it can be tempting to throw the stalks and leaves down the drain when you are done cutting. Avoid doing this at all costs. Fibrous vegetables, such as celery, corn husks, and the outer shell of onions will get caught up in the motor of the disposal. Also, while some potato skins are alright, refrain from letting a large amount of peelings into your garbage disposal. The starch in potatoes will eventually form a paste that will clog your disposal and cause the blades to get stuck and stop working.
