Like many problems that life throws at us, a clogged toilet usually happens at the most inopportune time. Plumbers are frequently asked how to unclog a toilet that is blocked by feminine hygiene products, baby wipes, paper cups, toys and other non-biodegradable substances.
While chemical agents and hot water can loosen toilet paper and waste materials, they have no effect on plastics. The chemicals in “unclog toilet” products are only designed to dissolve biodegradable materials, so the first best weapon of choice is a plunger – a good quality one – not a cheapie.
With the bottom of the plunger, form a good seal around the outlet. Ensure that the plunger is fully immersed in the water. This is very important. Now, grip the handle with both hands and pull and push the plunger vigorously, but not too much, or else you’ll break the seal that you formed. The pulling is just as important as the pushing – the objective is to loosen debris in the pipe and dislodge the clog.
When the water returns to standard level, pour a 5-gallon bucket of hot water into the bowl. This will not only prevent the toilet from overflowing, but it helps dissolve a buildup of waste materials. If this doesn’t work, try a hand auger to penetrate the clog. Turn the hand crank and push the auger down the drain. The end is designed to catch debris, which can be pulled out.
If neither the plunger nor the auger works, call a plumber to unclog the toilet because the blockage may be stubborn and require a more aggressive method of attack.
