Plumber, Licensed Plumber, Master Plumber – What’s the Difference?

To the potential customer, the terms above can be very confusing. Surely a plumber is a plumber is a plumber right? Unfortunately, it isn’t that simple. Technically anyone can call themselves a plumber, from the backyard DIY enthusiast with a Costco toolset to a plumber that is still in training or one that never finished his training - or one that finished the training process but never met the final testing requirements.

A licensed plumber on the other hand is a whole different ball game. It may just seem like a single word but it means a world of difference to you as the customer. Licensing implies that the plumber has been checked and tested by an external authority. In the case of North Carolina, licensed plumbers are certified by the North Carolina State Board of Plumbing, Heating and Fire Sprinkler Contractors. Applicants can be tested for either a technician’s or contractor’s license in the fields of plumbing, heating or both. A master plumber is a licensed plumber that also oversees the work of other plumbers and has in-depth knowledge of building codes, safety regulations and other relevant legislation. In many cases they are also required to have a relevant associate’s degree and a specified amount of experience in order to use the designation of master plumber; however, the criteria do differ from area to area. Rest assured, though, that master plumbers are highly qualified and experienced individuals at the top of their industry.

A lot of top plumbing companies have one or more master plumbers in management roles that are then supported by a group of licensed plumbers that do most of the actual work. Trainees (apprentices) that work under the supervision of licensed plumbers and are working towards getting their own licenses may also be present in the business.
