Sewer Pipe Problems in Older Homes Often Stem from Outdated Materials

Apart from age, the problems often stem from outdated plumbing materials like cast-iron drain pipes, galvanized steel water supply lines and clay sewer pipes. Plumbers stopped using these materials in the 1970s when plastic and copper piping became the industry standard, but they are still found in older homes.

Making a small repair like replacing a corroded section of a sewer pipe may solve the problem temporarily, but if the issue is widespread, it may be necessary to replace all sewer pipes and supply lines with new materials. Putting a band-aid on something that’s 80 years old is seldom the best option.

Also, repairs to older homes can be difficult because of outdated craftsmanship such as plaster walls instead of drywall, and thicker wood framing. They were built much stronger than new homes so cutting into a wall or drilling into wood is significantly more difficult.

Buying an Older Home?

There are some beautiful old homes in North Carolina, each with its own history, charm and character – but potential buyers are strongly urged to have the plumbing system inspected before closing the deal. Buyers know they have to get a home inspection, but a plumbing inspection often doesn’t even cross their minds. The time to find out if a sewer pipe needs replacing is before buying a home – not afterwards.
