Six Common Causes of a Water Heater Leak

What sometimes appears to be a water heater leak is often due to condensation, which occurs when cold water fills the tank. It should soon disappear. But, if condensation is not the culprit, a plumber needs to investigate. There are six common causes of water heater leaks.

• Damaged TPR (Temperature Pressure Relief) Valve:If it’s leaking water, it will need immediate repair to avoid the tank splitting open due to thermal expansion. In contrast, a TPR that’s functioning perfectly well may be leaking water because there is too much pressure in the tank – caused by high water pressure or high temperature settings.

• Faulty Drain Valves:If valves are loose, a plumber can tighten them, or they may need replacing.

• Clogged Vents:In gas units, these may cause leaks. Usually, unblocking the vents rectifies the problem.

• Heating Element Gasket: In electrical units, a plumber may have to install a new gasket to stop a water heater leak.

• Loosely Connected Incoming Water Pipe:A plumber will either tighten the fittings and piping or replace them.

• Corrosion:Water can leak out of a corroded tank. In this case, the only remedy is to replace the unit. If you are faced with this situation, consider replacing it with a tankless water heater. This type of unit is energy and water efficient, plus it will last longer than a conventional heater.
