Tankless Water Heaters are Catching on Fast in the Carolinas

All across the nation, tankless water heaters are becoming the preferred choice over storage tank units, and the Carolinas are no exception. Instead of heating water constantly in a stored tank, tankless water heaters only heat water when it’s needed. When you turn the hot water on, a gas or electric powered heat exchanger is triggered, and water is heated quickly to a preset temperature.

In a conventional heating system, the tank continually heats water to maintain a steady temperature. A lot of energy is used to keep the water hot – even when it’s not needed. This is referred to as standby heat loss. A tankless system avoids standby heat loss because, as already mentioned, it only heats water when it’s needed. Tankless systems are also appropriately called “on demand” water heaters – which is why they are more energy-efficient.
There are 2 types of tankless water heaters:
- Whole-House Units: As the name implies, they service a whole house. The unit can be mounted on a wall to save floor space.
- Point-of-Use Units: These operate 1 or 2 fixtures and are very user-friendly because they can be installed close to the outlet. This avoids “lag time” water losses. Lag time is how much time it takes for hot water to actually reach the faucets. These units are small and compact, so they can be mounted in closets, under cabinets or on walls.
Gas, propane or electricity can be used to power tankless water heaters.
